A door that sticks, drops or rattles is one of the most irritating faults in a home — and one of the easiest to get wrong. We hang internal and external doors properly across Devon and Cornwall, scribing each one to the opening so it closes with a satisfying, even shut.
Our door service covers everything from a single replacement to a whole house of new doors. We supply the door, hang it on the correct number and type of hinges, fit and adjust the latch, lock and handles, and ensure consistent gaps all round. Where the existing lining or frame is rotten, painted shut or simply wrong, we can replace it as part of the job.
We also handle making good — easing carpets, adjusting thresholds and tidying the architrave — so the finished door looks like it was always meant to be there. Old doors and packaging are removed and the area left clean.
Internal doors range from lightweight hollow-core panels to solid oak and period-style four-panel doors. The skill is in the hanging: a door must swing freely, clear the floor and any carpet, latch without slamming, and sit flush in the frame. We use the right hinge weight for the door, mortice rather than surface-fix where appropriate, and align everything so the door behaves the same in winter damp as in summer dry.
An external door has to do a great deal more than look good. In our coastal climate it faces driving rain, salt and strong winds, so weather sealing and drainage matter as much as the timber. We fit hardwood and engineered front doors with weatherbars, draught seals and the correct rebates, and we set them to swing and lock smoothly through every season. For exposed properties facing the Atlantic, we recommend timbers and finishes that stand up to the conditions.
Frames and linings: where an opening needs rebuilding we supply and fit new linings, casings and architrave, plumb and square, ready for the door.
Fire doors: we fit certified FD30 and FD60 doorsets with intumescent seals, fire-rated hinges and controlled gaps for loft conversions, HMOs and extensions, all to current Building Regulations.
Period & heritage doors: in a listed cottage or a Victorian terrace, the right door makes all the difference. We source and fit period-appropriate ledged-and-braced, plank and panelled doors, often scribing them into stone or cob openings that are anything but square.
Door fitting is priced per door, supplied and fitted. These 2026 figures for Devon and Cornwall assume the door is hung on a sound existing frame; new linings, frames and locks are quoted on top.
| Door type | Price (supplied & fitted) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Internal door, standard | £150 – £220 | Hollow-core to moulded panel on existing lining |
| Internal solid oak door | £220 – £320 | Heavier hinges, more scribing |
| Fire door (FD30) | £280 – £400 | Certified door, seals & closer |
| External / front door | £300 – £400+ | Weather sealing; bespoke quoted separately |
Hanging a door well is a deceptively skilled job, and it is where shortcuts show fastest. With over 10 years and 200+ projects across Devon and Cornwall, we have hung doors in everything from new-build estates in Plymouth to 400-year-old farmhouses near Tavistock. We fit the door to the building, not the other way round, and we stand behind the finish.

Door fitting typically costs between £150 and £400 supplied and fitted in 2026. A standard internal door hung on an existing lining is at the lower end; a solid oak door, a fire door with intumescent seals, or a heavy external door in an out-of-square period opening is at the upper end. New frames, linings and ironmongery are quoted on top where needed.
Yes — this is routine work for us in Devon and Cornwall. Period cottages with granite or cob walls rarely have square openings, so doors have to be scribed and tapered by hand to follow the frame while still closing cleanly. We never simply trim a door square and leave an ugly gap; we fit it to the building.
Yes. We supply and fit certified FD30 and FD60 fire doors with the correct intumescent and smoke seals, controlled gaps and fire-rated hinges and closers. This is essential for HMOs, loft conversions and many extensions in Plymouth, Exeter and across the region, and we fit them to current Building Regulations.
