Timber Fencing & Gates
in Devon & Cornwall

A fence has to stand up to whatever the South West throws at it — gales off the Atlantic, driving rain and waterlogged ground. We build timber fencing and gates across Devon and Cornwall to last, from garden boundaries in Plymouth to stock and equestrian fencing on rural holdings.

What's Included

Our fencing service covers the whole boundary: clearing and setting out the line, digging and concreting posts, fitting panels or building close-board fencing on site, hanging gates, and clearing away the old fence and spoil. We check levels and ground conditions before we start so the finished run is straight, plumb and properly supported — not leaning within a year.

Fence Types

Panel fencing is the quickest and most economical option for garden boundaries, with pre-made larch-lap or overlap panels dropped between posts. It suits sheltered suburban gardens well.

Close-board (feather-edge) fencing is built board by board on site over arris rails. It is far stronger and more wind-resistant than panels, which makes it the right choice for the exposed, gusty sites common across Devon and Cornwall. It also follows sloping and uneven ground neatly, which panels cannot.

We also build picket, post-and-rail and slatted contemporary fencing where the setting calls for it.

Posts: Concrete vs Timber

Posts are where fences live or die. Concrete postsnever rot at ground level — the point where timber posts almost always fail first — so for exposed and coastal boundaries they are our usual recommendation and give the longest life with the least maintenance.

Timber posts look more traditional and are well suited to rural, agricultural and equestrian settings. Where we use them we choose pressure-treated, properly graded timber, set in concrete with drainage at the base so water cannot collect and rot the post. Whichever you choose, the spacing and depth are set for the height of the fence and the exposure of the site.

Gates, Agricultural & Equestrian Fencing

We make and hang garden gates, side gates and double driveway gates, braced and hung on heavy-duty ironmongery so they swing true and do not drop. For rural clients we install post-and-rail, stock fencing and equestrian fencing for paddocks, smallholdings and farms — using stout timber, correct bracing and field or bridle gates suited to the livestock and the boundary.

Boundaries & Durability

Before we start a boundary fence we help you confirm the line, which avoids disputes later. Durability then comes down to materials and detail: all our fencing timber is pressure-treated, posts are set with drainage, and fixings are galvanised or stainless to resist the corrosion that salt air causes near the coast. The result is a fence that shrugs off Devon and Cornwall weather for many years rather than a few seasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does timber fencing cost in Devon and Cornwall?

Timber fencing typically costs between £80 and £120 per panel supplied and installed in 2026, including posts and fixings. Standard panel fencing sits at the lower end, while close-board and feather-edge fencing built on site, or runs needing new concrete posts, sit at the upper end. Gates, agricultural fencing and difficult ground are quoted separately.

Should I use concrete or timber fence posts?

Concrete posts last longest and are our usual recommendation for exposed and coastal sites in Devon and Cornwall, because they do not rot at ground level where timber posts fail first. Timber posts look more traditional and suit rural and equestrian settings; when used we set pressure-treated posts in concrete with good drainage to maximise their life.

Can you build agricultural and equestrian fencing?

Yes. We install post-and-rail, stock fencing and equestrian fencing for paddocks, smallholdings and farms across Devon and Cornwall. We use stout, properly treated timber and the right post spacing and bracing for the boundary and the animals it contains, including field gates and bridle gates.

Do you install fencing in my area?

Yes. We supply and install timber fencing and gates throughout Devon and Cornwall, including Plymouth, Exeter, Torquay, Barnstaple, Truro and Tavistock, plus the surrounding rural areas and smallholdings.
